Group presents Climate Risk Register to Nasarawa State Government
Amina Mohammed, Lafia.
The African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) has presented a Climate Risk Register to the Nasarawa State Government in North-Central Nigeria.
Mr. Joseph Ibrahim, the African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) Project manager in the state, while making the presentation, urged the Nasarawa State Government to adopt the Climate Risk Register and design an intervention programme that would benefit the communities in the state.
Ibrahim said that the Climate Risk Register (CRR) was earlier developed at community and local government levels as a risk appraisal and management tool to assess and improve the resilience of communities and their climate-related risks.
He explained that they are in the state to present the Climate Risk Register after going around the 13 local government areas to identify the risk factors in 26 communities that might likely be affected by climate change if urgent measures were not taken to mitigate it.
“We were able to identify ten climates risks across the 13 local government areas among which are flooding, soil erosion, soil infertility and high temperature, among others,” said Ibrahim.
He further urged the government and civil society organizations to adopt the Climate Risk Register and design an intervention programme that would benefit the communities.
African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) is a project implemented by Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) with support from Oxfam.
In her presentation titled “Gender and Environmental Risk Reduction Initiative,” Dr. Lillian Abah explained the importance of the Climate Risk Register as a disaster-reduction tool that serves as an early warning system for communities and local government.
“It makes you plan to avert any disaster that might arise as a result of climate change,” said Dr. Lillian Abah.
The Acting Director of Climate Change, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Angbashim Ishaku, responded on behalf of the Nasarawa State Government.
He commended the African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) for taking the time to go round the 13 Local Government Areas in the state and come up with the Climate Risk Register that would help reduce the impact of climate change in the state.
(The AACJ is implemented by Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) with support from Oxfam).
He further assured that the Climate Risk Register would be examined and implemented based on the provisions of the State’s budget.
“Climate change affects food security and conflict, but when mitigated, it would reduce the problem of food insecurity,” he added.
