A significant gathering of Almajiris took place at Arewa House in Kaduna, where they received training on various farming methods aimed at fostering self-reliance and enhancing their integration into society.
The event, dubbed “Almajiri Let’s Farm,” was organized by the Nutriment Investment Hub, a subsidiary of Nutriment Feeds, as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. Dauda Oche, the head of the hub, emphasized the importance of empowering these young individuals through sustainable practices.
Recognizing the challenges faced by the Almajiris, we felt compelled to take action. This program is focused on not only educating them about farming but also empowering them with alternative agricultural techniques,” Oche stated.
The training covered various topics, including sack farming, gardening, and poultry production, enabling the Almajiris to learn viable methods of earning a livelihood.
In addition to agricultural training, participants also engaged in shoe cobbling and soap making, further broadening their skill sets.

Oche highlighted the ethos behind the initiative, stating, “Our aim is not to create dependency but to foster collaborations with stakeholders that lead to sustainable outcomes.
We believe that Almajiris possess dignity, talent, and intelligence.”
The initiative also aims for an expansive reach, with plans to empower approximately 10,000 Almajiris in the future.
According to the World Health Organization, there are between 8.5 to 10 million Almajiris, many of whom are out of school. Empowering this demographic can significantly contribute to food security and reduce street dependency,” he explained.
The pilot program started with 100 Almajiris from various locations, divided into five groups focusing on shoe-making, crop production, poultry, soap-making, and a potential forays into artificial intelligence training.
Oche remarked, “We recognize that language can be a barrier, but we are committed to teaching them essential skills that will prepare them for the future, including the realm of AI.
Through this initiative, Nutriment Investment Hub aspires to create a transformative impact in the lives of Almajiris, equipping them not only for immediate productivity but also for long-term success in an evolving economic landscape.
