Groups raise awareness on routine immunization

Groups has raised awareness on the need for routine immunization from the age of 0- 59 months.

Representatives from Organisations such as the rotary foundation, District Polio Chain, End Polio Now, FCT primary health care amongst others were at the Road walk all wearing red t-shirts with the inscription End Polio Now written on the shirts.

Nigeria has joined the rest of the world in commemoration of world Polio Day in Abuja the nation’s capital.

The commemoration which is marked every October 24 held in Abuja, Nigeria’s with a sensitization Road Walk and campaign.

The road walk was to raise awareness on the need to completely eradicate Polio in Nigeria and Africa at large as statistics show that cases have drastically reduce.

The aim of the road walk was to raise awareness on the need to immunise Children from the age of 0- 59 months.

At the sensitization Road walk, Mrs, Jane Egbo from District Polio Chain, District 9125 that covers Twenty Three State including Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria says they have distributed two hundred wheel chairs to Polio survival victims in Kano State Northwest Nigeria

“We are unveiling immunization excise every month around all the Local Government immunizing children, and we are appealing to parents to avail their children for Polio immunization.

“Those who are Polio survivals if their parent had availed them to take immunization they wouldn’t have been the victims,” Mrs Egbo added

Similarly the Chairman National Polio Club Committee Mr Joshua Hassan said they are putting measures with other partners like WHO, FCT primary health care Board to ensure the eradication of Polio in Nigeria and Africa at large.

“We are here to create awareness to traditional rulers, to government officials and to religion leaders to make sure that children are bring out for routine immunization.”

While reeling out the Government’s plan, the Executive Secretary FCT Primary Health Care Board, Dr Yakubu Mohammed, noted that this year’s commemoration is different, because the Country also lunched the Human Pipiloma Vaccine on same date and the fight against Polio continues

The Executive Director, Rotary International Mr Ahmed Sani noted that Nigeria is among the Countries in the world that achieved success in eradication of Polio

“When Polio campaign started around around 1985 there was over was over Two Hundred Countries that were Polio endemic as of today only two countries are endemic.

“The cases of Polio is really dropping in the country and very soon Nigeria will be Polio free.”

It is believed that with the continuous routine immunization, sensitisation and support from government and health partners Nigeria will soon be completely Polio free.
