The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to conduct an immediate survey of the River Niger that shares a boundary with Kwara North Senatorial District of Kwara State and part of Niger State.

This is to implement effective safety measures so as to prevent future occurrences of boat mishaps in the Riverine areas.

The Senate made the call when a member, Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar representing Kwara North Senatorial District of Kwara State formally notified the National Assembly about the tragic boat mishap that occurred in Gwajigbo -Mudi community in the Kaiama Local Government area of the state which resulted in the unfortunate loss of many lives.

The Senate also resolved and called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to promptly provide aid and relief to the affected communities to mitigate the suffering caused by the tragedy.

Senator Umar, however, extended his heartfelt condolences to the government of Kwara State led by Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq, the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Mu’azu Shehu Omar and the entire community affected by what he described as a heartbreaking incident.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time”, the Lawmaker added.
