Nigerian farmers have received $1 million technical support from Heifer International Nigeria.

The funds will help Nigerian farmers gain access to tractors – thereby boosting farming activities, improving crop yield and food security.

Adesuwa Ifedi, Senior Vice President of Africa Programs at Heifer International, made this known at a press briefing in Abuja.

She said Heifer International was partnering with Hello Tractors – whose booking platform would serve in ensuring Nigerian farmers can receive loans which would be easily repaid  from revenues the farmers earn.

We started in 2020 just as the world was  closing down to begin to think about what 2030 would look like. One thing that became obvious was that there was a digital divide. There are those that have access to digital technology, there are those that are not even on that spectrum.”

Heifer believes in the small-farmer holder power. And we know the power the small farmers have is not just to feed their families, but to improve their lives, and create jobs in their communities. They also have the power to change the dynamics of the country’s and continent’s economics,” she added.

Ifedi said Heifer would continue to tap into Nigeria’s agricultural potential through its initiative called ‘Naija Unlock.

Performing

The Vice-President said Heifer International would ensure Nigeria becomes a hub for food and agricultural exports – thereby cutting off the nation’s $20 billion import bill.

She said by doing so, Nigeria would reduce rising food price inflation and also build a new generation of young agropreneurs.

Heifer International has worked across the world since 1944 building the capacity of farmers to improve livelihoods and end poverty.
