The House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence has urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritise and improve funding for agencies in the intelligence sector.

Chairman of the Committee, Ahmad Satomi, made the appeal during the 2026 Budget Defence Meeting in Abuja, describing current allocations as inadequate to address Nigeria’s growing security challenges.

He noted that the intelligence subsector, which includes the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services, and the National Intelligence Agency, is allocated N664.1 billion in the 2026 budget proposal.

He stressed that training institutions visited by the committee were in poor condition and require urgent intervention.

Satomi also emphasised that legislative oversight of security agencies is constitutional and aimed at promoting transparency and accountability, not antagonism.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary, Special Services, Office of the National Security Adviser, Mohammed Sanusi, highlighted key focus areas for 2026, including combating terrorism and banditry, securing critical infrastructure, strengthening cybersecurity, and addressing transnational crimes.

He identified challenges in the 2025 budget implementation, such as irregular fund releases and foreign exchange constraints, and called for adequate supplementary funding to enhance national security operations.
