The House Representatives says it was ready to strengthen ties with the Republic of Ireland in the areas of education, technology, agriculture and renewable energy.
The chairman, Nigeria-Ireland Parliamentary Friendship committee, Professor Paul Nnamchi gave the indication while receiving the Irish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Peter Ryan, in Abuja.
He said that the parliamentary friendship is committed to identifying areas of mutual interest for collaboration between the two country, especially as it relates to economic development, trade, investment, and technology transfer.
Nnamchi noted that the committee would also work towards facilitating “business forums, investment symposiums, and trade missions to explore opportunities for bilateral trade and investment between Nigeria and Ireland in conjunction with ministry of affairs and the ambassadors.”
The lawmaker said the strategic framework for cooperation between the Nigeria and Ireland Legislative Friendship Committee represents a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral relations, promoting mutual prosperity, and advancing shared goals of peace, stability, and sustainable development.
“By working together in a spirit of partnership and collaboration, both countries can harness their collective strengths and resources to address common challenges and seize opportunities for a brighter future,” Nnamchi said.
The Irish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Peter Ryan, in his response, expressed delight over the initiative.
He said that Ireland was committed to collaborating with Nigeria in several areas.
“We are at your disposal. We are very excited for this. And I can’t tell you how grateful we are on behalf of Team Ireland here in Nigeria. How grateful we are for your initiative in this and we look forward to making many successes for both of our people together,” Mr. Ryan said.
He stressed that Nigeria and Ireland have had a smooth relationship spanning over four hundred years adding that more opportunities are available to be explored.
The Ambassador added that the Ireland Foreign Minister would visit Nigeria for St Patrick’s Day Celebration later this year.
