The House of Representative has commended Nigerian teachers and teachers all over the world for their sacrifices and building generations.
This was sequel to a motion by Hon. Musa Bagos on the Need for the House to recognise Teachers.
He said that it will be an honour teachers because most of the lawmakers became who they were today due to the sacrifices of teachers.
“Knowing that this is a very important day in the life of Teachers worldwide, it will be an honour for the House to recognise teachers, it will be an honour to give honour to teachers in Nigeria and at the same time to give them a standing ovation recognizing their sacrifices to building the nation,“ Bagos said.
He muted that because the labour of heroes past and the labour of leaders present must not be in vain.
While supporting the motion, the Minority Leader, Hon. Ndudi Elemelu, said that “Rising from the fact that whatever we are today was as a result of our tutoring from school and giving that today is Teachers Day, it was important to celebrate teachers.“
The speaker, while asking for contributions to the motion, asked members who their favorite teachers were.
Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Hon Aisha Dukku, Hon Aniekan Umama and other lawmakers remembered with nostalgia the teachers that molded their personalities.
They called for the appreciation of teachers and urged the federal government to improve the wellbeing of teachers in Nigeria.
The Deputy Speaker in his submission, said that the House has done a lot for teachers.
He said that the parliament amended the provision for the retirement age of teachers as well as the ongoing engagement to address the ASUU strike.
The Speaker while rolling on the matter, said that the contributions of teachers to societal development can never ever be quantified.
He called for a standing ovation and a round of applause for teachers and a minute of silence for teachers that have passed.
The members chanted “Thank you” in unison to teachers.
