The House of Representatives has ordered the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to conduct a comprehensive audit of Otedola Bridge within 30 days to assess its gradient, structure, and safety risks.
The ministry must propose modifications, including gradient reduction, reinforced barriers, and emergency escape lanes, for implementation within 12 months.
Lawmakers also directed the immediate allocation of emergency funds for repairs within 90 days, pending a full redesign.
Additionally, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) must install weighbridges and inspection stations along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway within 60 days to enforce weight limits and braking standards for fuel tankers.
Key directives include; ‘Mandatory biannual certification for fuel tankers, digitally monitored, to eliminate unsafe vehicles,
- Restricted tanker movement over Otedola Bridge from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., enforced by security agencies.
- Installation of speed cameras, rumble strips, and enhanced signage within 90 days.
- Mandatory training for tanker drivers on handling steep gradients and emergency responses.
The House also mandated a joint task force investigation into the March 11, 2025, tanker explosion and past accidents, ensuring legal action against responsible parties.’
The motion, sponsored by Rep. Sesi Wingan, highlighted Otedola Bridge as a danger zone due to engineering defects, mechanical failures, reckless driving, and poor enforcement.
He cited past tragedies, including the June 2018 tanker fire that killed at least 12 people and destroyed over 50 vehicles, calling for urgent intervention to prevent further disasters.
