House Poised To Improve Healthcare In Nigeria

The House of Representatives committee on Speciality Healthcare says the committee is poised to expanding the services of healthcare across Nigeria.

 

The Chairman of the committee Mr. Alex Egbona made the disclosure at a Public Hearing on three bills seeking to improve the Healthcare system of the Country.

 

He encouraged the stakeholders present to make meaningful contributions that would guard the House in making people centered legislation.

 

He stressed the need to enhance the capacity of the Nation’s health sector.

 

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Mr Tajudeen Abbas who declared the hearing open, said that the three bills generally seek to increase public access to healthcare for Nigerians in the area of eye care, vision and optical health and expand such specialised health facilities and services across all parts of the country.

 

The Speaker of the House Mr. Abbas Tajudeen pointed out that the three bills on Healthcare, will increase the Healthcare Asses to Nigerians at all levels.

 

The Speaker who was represented by Mr George Ozodimobi, urged stakeholders to make meaningful inputs to the bills.

 

It is our hope that your various deliberations, opinions and submissions on these Bills today will assist the Committee in its report to the House for further legislative actions. The Public Hearing therefore, opens a window of participation to identified stakeholders and indeed all Nigerians, in line with the inclusive and participatory legislative agenda of the 10th House of Representatives,” he said.

 

The public hearing had in attendance several Health officials, and Traditional Leaders in the Country.

 

The bills are: A Bil for an Act to Establish Federal institute of Vision and Optical Research, Erema, Ogba. Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, to provide for scientific research,
development of new technologies and products in Vision and Optical Health, and for Related Matters, (HB.586).

 

A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal College of Optometry, Odiokwu, AhoadaWest/Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni, Rivers State, to provide for courses leading to the award of designated Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates In Optometry, Ophthalmology and related Courses, and for Related Matters, (HB. 587); and A Bill for an Act to Amend the National Eye Centre Act, Cap. N38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to provide for the Establishment of more Speciaist Eye Care Centres: and for Related Matters (HB.1060).
