The Executive Secretary of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu, has paid tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, hailing his legacy as a “defender of rights and architect of reform” who strengthened Nigeria’s human rights institutions and pursued national peace.

Dr. Ojukwu, on behalf of the NHRC’s Governing Council and staff, extended condolences to the former president’s family, the government, and the Nigerian people.

“The news of the passing of President Buhari, who served our nation with full dedication and commitment, is received with deep sorrow,” he said.

Dr. Ojukwu praised Buhari’s pivotal role in reinforcing the Commission’s institutional strength, noting that his administration boosted budgetary support for human rights work and approved key national plans aimed at promoting justice and accountability.

“He approved the National Action Plans for Business and Human Rights, as well as the NAP for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights,” Ojukwu stated. “This was a clear demonstration of his belief in the promotion and protection of human rights for all Nigerians.”

Beyond policy, Buhari was also commended for his role in restoring relative peace and security to Nigeria’s insurgency-ravaged North East.

Under his leadership, government forces regained control of key territories previously overrun by Boko Haram militants, allowing displaced communities to return and rebuild.

“His relentless efforts helped reduce insurgent threats and restore normalcy to most communities devastated by conflict,” Ojukwu noted.

“At this moment of national mourning, we pray that the Almighty grants his soul eternal rest and comforts his family and the entire nation. May his patriotic service and sacrifice for the unity, peace, and progress of Nigeria never be forgotten.”
