Human Rights Commission compensates victims of rights violation

The panel probing allegations of human rights violations committed by the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, and other units of the Nigerian police sitting in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital has awarded the sum of 15 million Naira as compensation to the family of Miss Anita Akapson Who was extrajudicially killed by a Police Officer in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital.

It will be recalled that Miss Anita was shot dead on October 13, 2018 at about 9.45 pm, at Katampe extension, Abuja.

The compensation was sequel to a recommendations of the Panel.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission in Nigeria, Mr Tony Ojukwu stated that the event was historic as many did not believe that Nigerians could get succour.

Where there is a violation, there must be a remedy,”

“The commission has begun a journey to restore human dignity” he added.

Other victims of rights violation compasated at the event are; Bello Akubuokwu N500,000; James Dalis Yokon 3 million; Kingsley Ezara Kalu, 5 million; family of a youth corps member killed by the police in Abuja among others.

The commission added that 20 of the petitions considered in just one day had a total of N575.8 million in judgment debts against the police.

The compensations in the judgments, according to the commission, were awarded in cases bordering on extra-judicial killing, unlawful arrest and detention, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and torture, alleged enforced disappearance, confiscation of property, among others.
