The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, in Nigeria has been applauded for adopting Human Rights Education as a tool for building knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviour.
The Chairperson, Governing Council of the NHRC, Dr. Salamatu Husseini Suleiman commended the Commission during a quiz competition for secondary schools in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital organised by the NHRC as part of activities to mark the 2021 International Human Rights Day.
Dr. Salamatu at the event also said that the importance of entrenching human rights through knowledge-sharing, imparting of skills and moulding of attitudes in young learners cannot be overemphasised.
“As we test and celebrate our students on their knowledge of human rights, it is hoped that we also learn along and contribute our quota in entrenching a culture of human rights in our nation,” he stated.
About 10 schools within the Nigerian Capital, Abuja, participated in the quiz competition;Olumawu School in Wuse 2 won the first prize, African Child school Kubwa, a suburb in Abuja came second and Tulip International school came third.
The International Human Rights Day is celebrated globally every 10th of December to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly on 10th December 1948.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Equality-Reducing Inequalities,” and advancing Human Rights is hinged on the core principles of human rights which were fundamental to human and social interaction.
