The Nigerian Government says it is doubling the coverage on job and wealth creation opportunities for the teeming youths across the country.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social development, Sadiya Uma-Farouq said this in Abuja, Nigeria at the flag-off of Grant for Vulnerable group of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the Minister, over twelve million Nigerians have benefitted from the National Social Investment Programme in the last five years.
She emphasized that the programme is designed to provide a one-off grant to some of the poorest and most vulnerable women and youths in rural and peri-urban areas of the country.
“Furthermore, nearly 3 million Nigerians have benefitted under the GEEP and about 1 million are going to access the GEEP loans soon.”
The National Social Register captures about 12 million households out of which 2 million have been mined into a National Beneficiary Register. For the FCT, the government targets about 2,900 beneficiaries across the six area Councils.
“I have personally seen the life-changing experiences of many poor people who lived below the poverty line and those that are vulnerable to shocks.”
A beneficiary, Grace Sunday said the grant will help her improve on her already existing business.
“It will help improve my business because I sell oil perfumes, so it will make me buy more and also help people around me.”
The Minister maintained that Government is committed to its vision of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty by 2030.
