Sokoto State to generate 5 Megawatts of Electricity – Commissioner

The Sokoto State Government says all arrangements have been concluded to generate 5 Megawatts of electricity through a Hydro Power project in the Dam in Goronyo local government area.

The State Commissioner of Energy and Petroleum Resources, Mr Sanusi Danfulani, stated this shortly after he visited Goronyo Dam in Sokoto State, North West Nigeria.

According to him, the project would be conducted in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and foreign energy companies to source 5 hydro megawatts from the Goronyo Dam to complement the state-owned Independent Power Project (IPP) which he added will soon be put to use.

“The visibility study visit was to study and showcase the capacity of the dam so that the state can woo more investers for socio-economic development of the state in line with the state Governor Dr Ahmed Aliyu 9-Points Smart Agenda.

“The collaboration with federal government and foreign companies in Germany and China will harness the dam and ensure there is stable power supply and industrial growth and development.”

Mr Danfulani added that the Goronyo Dam Hydro project was capable of providing 25 Megawatts, but government decided to use only 5 mgwts to allow other agricultural activities to continue at the area.

He further noted that, the project if completed would make Sokoto energy hub and also will provide energy to Isa, Illela, Gwadabawa, Gada, Wurno, Rabah and Sabon Birni local government areas that are suffering from scarcity of power.

Similarly, the Commissioner said the State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has also approved the sum of N2 billion to complete the 35 Megawatts Independent Power Project (IPP) initiated by the administration of former Governor Aliyu Wamakko in the state.

 

Danfulani further said another N3 billion was approved by Governor for Solar Energy in some major roads in the metropolis,“The project is phase by phase, and its still ongoing across the state

“Governor Ahmed Aliyu has committed a whopping of N5 billion to provide electricity and other welfare of the people for improved socioeconomic and agricultural development in the state,” he added.

The Commissioner commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu, for his transformation aimed at attracting more investors for the economic development of the state.
