No fewer than 250 golfers are set to participate at the IBB Independence Golf and Tennis Tournament 2024, organized by the IBB International Golf and Country Club, to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day.

According to a statement by the organisers, the event promises to be a vibrant celebration of sportsmanship, national unity, and camaraderie, attracting participants and spectators from across the country and beyond.

Speaking ahead of the event in Abuja, the Club Captain, Ibrahim Babayo, shared the vision behind the Independence Day Cup, acknowledging that the country is currently facing economic challenges and a growing trend of emigration, often referred to as the “Japa syndrome.”

Despite these hurdles, he emphasized that the tournament aims to showcase the positive aspects of Nigeria and create an atmosphere of hope and optimism.

“We want to use this event to remind everyone that there is so much good in our country. “It is also an opportunity to open new doors for business relationships and partnerships, as we expect delegations from over six countries to attend.

“This will foster international engagement and provide a platform for promoting Nigeria’s potential,” he said.

The Vice Captain of the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Dr. James Agbonhese, who also doubles as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, noted that the golf and tennis

tournament would serve as a platform for fostering friendships and business connections, with various social events planned throughout the week.

“Participants and visitors will have the opportunity to engage in networking sessions, business forums, and cultural activities that celebrate Nigeria’s rich heritage and the spirit of independence.

“The week-long celebration, starting from Sept. 25, will feature a variety of competitions designed to engage participants of all skill levels and promote inclusivity within the sport.

“The grand finale on October 1st will indeed be a befitting celebration of the nation’s independence,” he said.

Dame Julie Donli, the Lady Captain of IBB International Golf and Country Club noted that the Ladies Golf Section (LGS) would also be organising an Appreciation kitty for all the past Captains and Lady Captains of the club on Thursday.

Donli said it was a special kitty for them, just to appreciate and thank them for a job well done and to also thank them for showing the current leadership the way, adding that they were just continuing from where the past leadership stopped.

The statement concluded by saying that the IBB Independence Golf and Tennis Tournament 2024 is more than just a sporting event; it is a celebration of resilience, unity, and the unyielding Nigerian spirit.

The management of the club is committed to making this year’s tournament a memorable experience for all, highlighting the importance of sports in building a stronger and more connected community.
