Minister of Communication Technology, Prof. Adebayo Shittu, on Wednesday restated that Information Communication Technology (ICT) remained pillar of the nation’s economic development.
Speaking at ongoing sectoral debate on diversification of the country’s economy at the House of Representatives in Abuja, Shittu said that the Federal Government is working hard to attain the objective.
The sectoral debate is organised by the House of Representatives as part of national efforts toward revamping the economy.
According to the minister, a road map has been developed to make ICT sector the backbone of the country’s economy.
He said that the road map would soon be unveiled to exploit its full potential.
He identified low patronage of ICT products and services by Nigerians and government institutions as one of the major challenges in the sector, adding, however, that the problems would be addressed.
Shittu also identified inadequate funding of projects and programmes of the ministry and vandalism of its facilities as other factors militating against rapid development of the sector, accounting for poor service delivery.
He therefore called for adequate funding and high patronage from Nigerians to ensure rapid growth of the sector.
Earlier in his remark, Chairman, House Committee on Telecommunications, Rep. Saheed Fijabi (Oyo-APC), said that ICT sector, if well harnessed would generate funds to run the economy.
