Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has assured the people of Plateau State of adequate security in the wake of recent violent attacks that have claimed several lives and displaced many residents in affected communities.

Egbetokun gave the assurance during a visit to the Governor and people of Plateau State, marking his third visit to the state since assuming office. He expressed condolences to the victims and their families.

“We condemn these acts of violence and recognise the severe impact they have on local farmers and communities. We have deployed more security personnel and assets to the affected areas and are working tirelessly with other security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and bring the masterminds of these injustices to justice,” he said.

The IGP praised the Plateau State Government for its efforts and reiterated the commitment of the police to resolving the crisis.

“The criminals are exploiting gaps in manpower across various local government areas. However, I assure you that these criminal elements will soon be outnumbered. I appeal to the people of Plateau to remain calm and peaceful. Please stop the ethnic profiling of criminals—let us treat them as criminals, not based on their origin. Once again, I assure you that these perpetrators will be apprehended,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the state government, Governor Caleb Mutfwang acknowledged the support the state has received from the Inspector General and the federal government.

“What has happened in the last three weeks is a setback to the development of Plateau. What occurred in the hinterlands was plain murder—sheer criminality—where innocent lives, including children aged between 2 and 9, were massacred. We must unravel the story and act swiftly to arrest the situation.”

Governor Mutfwang expressed renewed confidence in the federal government’s intervention, noting that President Bola Tinubu had deployed additional security forces to the troubled areas.

“I want to thank you for visiting. Our confidence is renewed. The President has assured us that all security agencies are working to bring the situation under control. For now, things are calm, and we are doing our best to prevent further occurrences. As a state, we will continue to support the police and collaborate with all security agencies to improve the situation,” he added.

The IGP was accompanied by other top security chiefs and representatives of federal security agencies.
