IIP-SARS Panel gives Abba Kyari’s lawyer ultimatum

The Independent Investigation Panel on Human Rights Violations by the defunct Special Anti – Robbery Squad, Sars, and other units of the Nigerian Police Force has given counsel to the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, Mr. Abdullahi Haruna (SAN), one more chance to appear before it to respond to pending petitions involving the DCP Kyari.

 

This is not the only matter DCP Abba Kyari is facing, as he is currently at the custody of Kuje correctional center on drug related offenses filed against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA.

 

Giving the directives for Kyari’s Counsel to appear in Abuja, the Chairman IIP-SARS Panel, retired Justice Suleiman Galadima (SAN) recalled that Abba Kyari’s Counsel Abdullahi Haruna (SAN) had in his letter to the panel revealed that he was briefed by his client (Kyari) to take over all the petitions involving him .

 

The petitions borders on alleged unlawful arrest and detention, torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment brought against Abba Kyari and Inspector General of Police.

 

The Panel Chairman, represented by Dr. Garba Tetengi (SAN) noted that one week was earlier given to Kyari’s lawyer to appear for his client to enable the panel find out the truth in several petitions where his name was mentioned as respondent.

 

He said that following the request by Barrister Haruna, SAN, the panel directed its Secretariat to oblige him with the necessary petitions and proceedings related thereto.

 

The Panel noted with surprised that Kyari’s counsel has again failed to report.

 

The panel therefore, gave Abba Kyari’s Counsel another opportunity to do the needful, since he was informed that, the matter would come up Wednesday 30th – 03- 2022 and he needed to cross-examine the petitioner’s witnesses.

 

Counsel to the Police, James Idachaba informed the panel that his team is no longer appearing for Abba Kyari in the petition as he now has a counsel in the person of Abdullahi Haruna (SAN).

 

The panel has adjourned till April 20th, 2022.
