IITA Charges African Leaders to Invest in Modernised Agriculture
The Director-General of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Dr Nteranya Sanginga, has tasked African leaders, particularly Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to show more commitment and investment in modernised agriculture to ensure food security.
Sanginga gave the charge at an interactive session with journalists, to celebrate his two years in the office on Thursday in Ibadan.
Remarking, he noted that agriculture can help tackle several challenges faced by Africans.
“Most of the challenges confronting the continent like unemployment, youth unrest, crime, political instability and economic instability, would be brought under control,” Sanginga said.
However, the IITA DG decried the disposition of African leaders to agriculture development despite the abundance of natural and human resources.
Meanwhile, Sanginga is a citizen of DRC and the first African to occupy the position.
