Independence Day: Pure Heart Islamic Foundation Calls for Compassionate Economic Policies
Lateefah Ibrahim-Animashaun, Lagos.
As Nigeria commemorates its 64th Independence Day, the Pure Heart Islamic Foundation (PHF) is calling on government officials at all levels to adopt more humane economic policies aimed at alleviating poverty and promoting social justice.
The organisation highlighted the importance of Zakat, which encourages wealth sharing with those in need, suggesting that similar systems could be implemented to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind.
“The time is now for policies that prioritise the well-being of the people, moving beyond mere economic statistics,” said the National Coo-ordinator of PHF, Mr Ola Balogun.
Sustainable economic growth
They emphasised that to achieve sustainable economic growth and elevate Nigeria’s standing among developed nations, the government must invest in the future of its children, youth, and communities.
Reflecting on the nation’s journey since gaining independence in 1960, the foundation joins millions of Nigerians, both domestically and in the diaspora, in recognising the challenges faced, including civil war, military coups, and economic recessions and significant achievements such as the restoration following civil conflict and the transition back to democracy.
Throughout these tumultuous times, Muslim youth have made substantial contributions across various sectors, from leadership and community development to education and entrepreneurship.
PHF encourages all Nigerians, particularly the youth, to embrace the values that unify the nation, particularly in an era marked by increasing tribalism and sectarianism. “Islam teaches us the importance of peace, tolerance, and collaborative efforts for the common good,” the statement read.
Peaceful coexistence
The foundation urges citizens to build bridges of understanding and foster peaceful coexistence, emphasising that a united Nigeria can emerge as a leading nation both in Africa and globally.
The organisation acknowledges the current economic instability and threats to national unity, including declining security and over-reliance on oil revenues. While it recognises recent initiatives, such as the Education Loan Fund and efforts to combat insecurity, PHF advocates for further measures to ensure access to quality education and enhance safety for all citizens.
Education and healthcare remain central to the foundation’s mission. “Every household in Nigeria should have access to quality education and healthcare without financial burden,” they stated, calling on the government to reform these vital services.
PHF also commended the Nigerian government for its unwavering support of the Palestinian cause, as articulated by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the recent UN General Assembly.
The foundation urges global leaders to advocate for peace in the ongoing conflicts in At the recent UN General Assembly, Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasised the country’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, stating that Palestine deserves independence.
His remarks highlighted a fundamental commitment to justice in the current global landscape.
Fundamentally humanitarian
In light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon—where thousands of innocent lives, including those of youth, children, and women, have been lost, Shettima called on world leaders to unite in promoting peace.
Balogun framed the issue as not merely political, but fundamentally humanitarian, urging a concerted effort to de-escalate the crisis and protect vulnerable populations.
“As we mark this Independence Day, I urge all citizens, both at home and in the diaspora, to remain dedicated to fostering peace, unity, and national development,” he stated.
He encouraged Nigerians to resist provocations and to uphold values that contribute to a thriving nation.
They expressed a collective hope for wisdom among leaders and a guided path towards a future filled with hope, justice, and prosperity for all Nigerians.
