President Tinubu Mourns Renowned Professor Of Cardiology, Jibril Aminu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his condolences to the family and friends of Professor Jibril Muhammad Aminu, describing the passing as a profound loss to the nation.

The President lauded his dedication to both the medical field and politics, noting that he brought outstanding knowledge and intelligence to governance.

In a heartfelt tribute, President Tinubu said Professor Aminu epitomised statesmanship and was committed to building a greater Nigeria.

Further extending his condolences to the government and the people of Adamawa State, the President encouraged all who grieve Prof. Jibril to take comfort in his enduring legacy and significant contributions throughout history.

The President prays Prof. Aminu’s soul finds eternal peace in Aljannah Firdaus and that Allah will forgive his sins.

Professor Aminu was a respected professor of cardiology and one of Nigeria’s most decorated medical professionals.

In his professional life, Prof. Aminu earned many laurels for his grit, hard work, and expertise. He was a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London, a fellow of the West African College of Physicians, and a fellow of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College.

He was also a consultant in medicine, Senior Lecturer and Sub-Dean of clinical Studies at the University of Ibadan Medical School (1973–1975), Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (1975–1979), visiting Professor of Medicine at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington DC (1979–1980), and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (1980–1985).

Professor Aminu served meritoriously in public service as Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2003 and as senator representing Adamawa Central Senatorial District from 2003 to 2011.

He also served as Minister of Education and then Petroleum and Mineral Resources (1989–1992).

Life And Times

The distinguished Nigerian Prof. Of cardiology was born in Song, Adamawa Province, Nigeria.

He had his education locally before advancing to higher studies in medicine. He earned his M.B.B.S degree from the University of Ibadan in 1965 and later obtained a PhD in Medicine from the Royal Post-Graduate Medical School, London, in 1972.

Aminu was a respected medical scholar and educator. He served as a Consultant in Medicine, Senior Lecturer, and Sub-Dean of Clinical Studies at the University of Ibadan Medical School (1973–1975). He was also Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (1975–1979). Aminu held a visiting professorship at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC (1979–1980) and was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri from 1980 to 1985.

He continued as a Professor of Medicine at the University of Maiduguri until 1995.

He was recognized as a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science (1972), Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London (1980), and Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (1980). In 2004, he was made a Distinguished Fellow of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College

Transition To Politics

Aminu transitioned into public service, holding key ministerial roles including Federal Minister of Education and Federal Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (1989–1992).

During his tenure as Petroleum Minister, he was President of the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization and President of the OPEC Conference in 1991–1992.
