Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday for a two-day visit, where he will serve as the guest of honor at the island nation’s 57th National Day celebrations on Wednesday.

At the airport, he was received by Mauritius’ Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who returned to office for a third term in 2024.

During his visit, Modi is set to hold high-level meetings with the country’s leadership, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations, strategic cooperation, and security and development partnerships in the Indian Ocean region.

Ahead of the talks, Modi paid tribute to former Mauritian Prime Minister Seewoosagur Ramgoolam by laying a wreath at his memorial in the botanical garden.

His visit comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for a potential agreement between Mauritius and Britain regarding the future of the joint U.S.-British military base in the Chagos Islands.

India has long backed Mauritius’ sovereignty claims over the Indian Ocean archipelago.
