The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Hassan Shado, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of Saturday’s bye-election for the Okura Constituency in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria.

The Returning Officer, Professor Emmanuel Enenche Onome, announced the results at the Egume Collation Centre.

Onome says the APC candidate polled a total of 55,073 votes, while the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) scored 1,038 and 445 votes, respectively.

The election, however, witnessed low voter turnout, with some opposition parties raising concerns about the credibility of the process.

The by-election was conducted following the death of Enema Paul, the former lawmaker who had represented the Okura State Constituency at the State Assembly before his death some months ago.

The election was peaceful, as the voters expressed satisfaction with the level of security provided by the security agencies in Kogi State, which enhanced the orderly conduct of the by-election.
