The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has mobilised security, human and material resources, for a credible House of Representatives rerun elections in Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo and Orumba North and Orumba South federal constituencies in Anambra State holding on February 3, 2024.
The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Anambra State, Dr Elizabeth Agwu, made the disclosure during a media interaction held in collation Hall INEC office Awka, the state capital.
She assured residents, especially voters that their votes would count, that no voter would be intimidated as various security personnel will be on ground to provide security.
Dr Agwu said the rerun election was in response to a court order that directed that the election in the 21 polling units be cancelled and rerun conducted instead.
She further explained that the rerun would be held at 16 polling units at Nanka (Orumba North Council Area) to determine the winner of Orumba North and Orumba South federal constituency and 5 polling units at Nnewi (Nnewi North Council Area) to determine the winner of Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo federal constituency.
She stated that the total number of voters at affected polling units in Nnewi North were 97,438 while that of Orumba North stood at 161,914 voters.
“Do not be compromised. Vote for the best candidates that can represent you well. Do not say you won’t vote again because anyone is leading before.
“If you know the candidate you voted for before is still the same person you will vote for, come out to vote for him or her again. If you want to vote for another candidate, you are free to do so too. The election is going to be free, fair and credible.
“You will not be intimidated or molestated by anyone. There will be enough security. Do not allow anyone to use you as a thug.
“There will be no room for manipulation, vote buying or vote selling. The 2022 INEC electoral Act is against this and you will be prosecuted. All the candidates can still mobilise votes but political campaigns end two days to election date,” Agwu affirmed.
She also commended journalists in Anambra for factual reportage and for always confirming issues before publishing, urging them to do a good job during the election.
On his part, the Acting Administrative Secretary, INEC Awka, Chukwuemeka Nnaji assured that the Commission was committed to conducting credible elections.
Nnaji said that the Commission kept improving its services as it had learnt from past mistakes from elections held in the country.
“We will not relent in learning from the past experience to fine tune future elections in the country as all elections mean the same to the commission,” he said.
