INEC set for elections in Rivers State

All is set for Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in Rivers State, South-South Nigeria.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State has commenced the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials for the elections to the 23 local governments in the state.
At the INEC office in Obio/Akpor local government area, INEC officials said the distribution of the materials, was being sorted out for easy allocation to wards of the local government.
INEC Presiding officers and security personnel were seen milling around and sorting through the materials for onward distribution.
On the streets of Port Harcourt Rivers State, people were seen going about their business. According to the Chief Security Officer of Obio/Akpor local government Maclife Awewuna, “No fracas has been recorded. People are going about their business waiting for the election tomorrow”.
He expressed confidence in the readiness and preparation of the security deployed to the local government.
Increased commerce activities
Most shops were under lock and key as most of the owners had travelled in preparation to vote at their polling units.
The markets, however, were a beehive of activity as people were stocking up against the no-movement restriction of Saturday.
Mike, a butcher, at one of the markets said “the unusual crowd was a result of the no movement on Saturday so people were stocking up for the election and the weekend”.
On February 25, Nigerians will head to the polls to elect a new President and members of the National Assembly.
There are 18 candidates for the presidential election, however, four candidates lead the pack as frontrunners. They are Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party.
