Information Minister Calls For Restoration Of Values For Development
By Samuel Okocha, Abuja
Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, says the country needs to remember the past to shape the future, as part of efforts to preserve the values that build a strong Nigeria.
The Minister was speaking when members of the Sardauna Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation led by the former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Radio House, Abuja.
“We see what happens in developed countries,” the Minister noted, during the meeting.
“Every parent is so proud for his child to go to the school that he attended. So, at what point did we get it wrong?”
The Sardauna Ahmadu Bello Foundation was established to build on the ideals of Sir Ahmadu Bello, widely known for instilling values aimed at building human capacity during his life time as the Premier of Northern Nigeria.
The Foundation is now working to build on that legacy to improve the quality and access to affordable education in northern Nigeria.
“It’s not just a northern issue,” the Minister continued, adding that the country must work to stop the gradual erosion of the values Nigeria’s founding leaders like Sir Ahmadu Bello was known for.
“I think that for Nigerians as a whole, we need to have a rethink. And this is where the concept of value reorientation now comes in.”
During the courtesy visit, the leader of the team, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau said the Foundation sees the Ministry of Information and National Orientation as an important platform through which to deliver its contributions to the nation.
He said the Foundation takes education seriously and sees it as a great vehicle of change, noting it has been working to unlock education as a tool for human capital development.
“We commissioned a study on the status of education in the northern states and now that the report is ready, we wish to share its findings at a National Conference on Education billed for 10th October 2023, where all agencies and stakeholders in education will attend.“
They also presented copies of the report to the Minister.
