Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has announced that his ministry is working hard to unveil a blueprint for the rollout of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) across Nigeria.

The Minister made this announcement while declaring open the Management Conference and Retreat of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Abuja.

“I want to use this opportunity to restate federal government commitment to the Digital Switch Over (Project), as the Ministry of Information and National Orientation is working assiduously for a DSO blueprint that will not fail; that will roll out across urban and rural Nigeria,” the Minister said, adding the NTA is  expected to play a prominent role as key stakeholder in the DSO project.

The DSO project is a government-led initiative aimed at transitioning Nigeria’s broadcasting sector from analogue to digital broadcasting.

The DSO project’s pilot phase was launched in Jos in 2016. However, only eight of Nigeria’s thirty-six states have been partially covered so far. These states include Lagos, Kano, Rivers, Kwara, Enugu, Osun, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The new administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has committed to the project, with the Ministry of Information and National Orientation pledging to speed up the implementation of the project across the country. The Nigerian broadcasting industry is expected to benefit from the successful completion of the DSO project, with improved quality and variety of programming, increased revenue generation, and enhanced viewer experience.
