A Former Army Chief of Nigeria, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has called for the perticipation of communities and other government machneries in the ongoing efforts of curtailing the lingering insecurity bedeviling parts of the country.
General Buratai emphasized the use of non kinetic measures in addressing the underlying root causes of insecurity across Nigeria.
He mentioned that the purpose of the non kinetic approaches was to create better atmosphere for negotiations, mediations, and dialogue in terms of crises.
General Buratai who is presently Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, stated this during a lecture delivered on politics and Insecurity in Nigeria, that was organised by Ahmadu Bello University.
General Buratai, who dwelled on Politics, democracy, National Security as well as concept of Peace during his presentation, highlited more on how the government and elements of politics can really influence national security which are critical to national development.
“Some of the Major security Challenges facing Nigeria today includes ; insurgency and terrorism in the North East, armed banditry and kidnapping in the North West, Farmers/Herdsmen conflict in the North Central,others include agitations for succession in the South West and as well as Oil theft and Piracy in the South South,” General Buratai said.
He further highlited other comprehensive ways to be adopted in curtailing the menece of the ongoing insecurity in the country such as ” integrated approach and sustaining the ongoing judicial reforms in the country, as well as revitalization of Defense Industries Corporation, sustaining the ongoing reforms of the Nigerian Police and procurement of modern platforms and systems for intelligence gathering”.
The Former Army Chief emphasized that defeating the hydra – headed monster of insecurity in Nigeria, requires a comprehensive approach that involves all the machinery of government the Local governments, MDAs, police force, para Military Organisations as well as the Armed forces of Nigeria.
He commended Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari for his sincere efforts in addressing security challenges confronting the country.
