International Bodies Remember Pope Francis for Justice, Compassion

Following the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday at the age of 88, international organisations across the globe have expressed deep sorrow, paying tribute to his enduring legacy of compassion, peace, and social justice.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres described Pope Francis as “a global voice for peace, human dignity, and compassion.” The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, also paid tribute, highlighting the Pope’s unwavering advocacy for displaced persons and refugees worldwide.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Pope Francis “inspired millions beyond the Catholic Church with his humility and unwavering support for the poor and vulnerable.”

African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed deep sorrow, acknowledging the Pope’s efforts in promoting interreligious harmony and advocating for justice and equality on the African continent.

World Health Organisation Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised the Pope’s contributions to global health, particularly his support for equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines and healthcare for marginalised communities. “He reminded the world that health is a human right,” Tedros said.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) extended condolences to the Catholic Church and recognised Pope Francis’s consistent appeals for humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians in conflict zones.

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) called Pope Francis “a shepherd of peace.”

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
