The International Day for Street Children was held on Saturday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, North Central Nigeria.
They are children who spend most of their time on the streets fending for themselves, but return home regularly. The day is observed every year on April 12th to mark the anniversary of the first United Nations General Assembly on children in 1955.
It provides a voice for children who live on the streets so that their rights cannot be ignored. The day has been recognized by governments, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world.
As part of the celebration in the state, stakeholders raised awareness on the need to educate and amplify the voice of street children. During a sensitisation walk organised by the Home and Street Kids Welfare Initiative (HSKi) under its founder and Executive Director, Miss Funmilayo Omisope, said that educating street children was paramount to a safer society.
According to her, the International Day for Street Children (IDSC) is being celebrated globally to look into the plight of street children for them to ease their situation.
