The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, IPCR, has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with international organisations in supporting peacebuilding and reconstruction efforts in post-conflict areas.

The focus includes promoting sustainable peace and development in the Sahel, the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC,  and across Africa.

The Director-General of IPCR, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu made this known during a strategic meeting with the executive members of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria, DICAN, in Abuja.

Dr. Ochogwu noted that while the Institute has primarily concentrated on Nigeria’s internal conflicts, it must also address regional challenges, including insecurity and diplomatic issues.

“This year, my management and I are committed to broadening our focus. We will examine the French withdrawal from the Sahel, ongoing crises in the region, the situation in the DRC, and how Nigeria can project its soft power across Africa, which is central to our mandate. Over the years, we have largely focused on internal conflicts, but that must change,” he said.

Media collaboration

He emphasised the importance of media collaboration in achieving IPCR’s objectives, stating that “research without proper dissemination has limited impact.”

The media is central to the work we do. If you want to advocate for change in any society, the role of the media is critical,” he said.

Dr. Ochogwu also stressed the need for greater engagement between Nigeria’s foreign policy experts and the public to counter misinformation and ensure accurate narratives on international issues.

He called for improved visibility of Nigeria’s diplomatic and research institutions in global discussions, emphasising that official statements must be carefully framed to reflect the government’s position without misinterpretation.

The Chairman of DICAN, Idehai Frederick reaffirmed the association’s commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and foreign missions in Nigeria to ensure accurate and timely dissemination of information to the public.

He also highlighted the importance of continuous training and capacity-building for DICAN members, noting that such initiatives would enhance their ability to report effectively on diplomatic and foreign affairs developments.

The meeting reinforced the critical role of diplomatic correspondents in shaping foreign policy discourse and promoting public awareness of Nigeria’s global engagements.
