The International Press Institute (IPI) has raised concern over reported threats by senior U.S. officials to revoke the broadcasting licenses of media organisations covering the ongoing U.S.–Israeli war in Iran.

According to IPI, remarks attributed to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr reportedly backed by President Donald Trump, suggest potential regulatory action against broadcasters accused of what officials described as “distorted” or “misleading” war reporting.

IPI warned that such statements, if acted upon, could undermine press freedom and freedom of expression in the United States. The organisation described the situation as a troubling development that may erode constitutional protections guaranteed under the First Amendment.

The concerns stem from social media exchanges in which Carr appeared to caution broadcasters about their editorial direction ahead of future license renewals. The comments followed criticism from President Trump regarding coverage of military developments involving Iran.

In a separate statement, Trump reportedly dismissed a media report detailing damage to U.S. Air Force assets as “fake news” and expressed support for stronger action against what he termed “unpatriotic” news organisations.

IPI Executive Director Scott Griffen criticised the developments, stating that government officials do not have the authority to dictate media coverage. He emphasised that independent journalism remains a cornerstone of democratic society and must be protected from political interference.

The institute further noted that even the suggestion of regulatory retaliation could have a chilling effect on the media, discouraging critical reporting and limiting the free exchange of ideas.

IPI called on U.S. authorities to uphold constitutional principles and ensure that journalists can operate freely without fear of sanctions or intimidation.
