Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim, a prominent Islamic scholar and Chairman of the Fatwa Committee of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has called for peace and harmony among religious adherents across Nigeria.

Speaking at a World Press Conference held at his residence in Abuja, Sheikh Ibrahim emphasised the need for unity and tolerance as vital components for national progress.

Highlighting Nigeria’s diversity as a strength, Sheikh Ibrahim stressed that God’s design in uniting various ethnic groups under one nation was intentional and urged citizens to embrace their differences.

He called on religious leaders to foster dialogue and mutual understanding among followers of different faiths to build a peaceful and cohesive society.

National Security and Unity

Addressing the nation’s security challenges, Sheikh Ibrahim urged the government to intensify efforts to combat insurgency, banditry, and other forms of insecurity plaguing the country. According to him, peace is essential for economic recovery and social stability.

“All Nigerians have a role to play in fostering unity, enhancing national security, and contributing to sustainable development,” he said, adding that collective effort is needed to ensure lasting progress for the nation.

Economic Challenges

Sheikh Ibrahim also expressed deep concern over the economic hardships faced by Nigerians. He appealed to the federal government to implement policies aimed at alleviating poverty and improving living conditions, emphasizing that leaders are divinely mandated to care for all citizens, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or social status.

“Nigeria is blessed with abundant resources, a vibrant population, and immense talent. We must set aside our differences and unite to promote the betterment of our country for future generations,” he said.

Media’s Role in Promoting Good Governance

The Islamic scholar underscored the critical role of media practitioners in promoting good governance and national unity. He urged journalists to prioritise the nation’s interest, avoid reports that could threaten peaceful coexistence, and hold leaders accountable for their actions.

“The media is the eyes and ears of society, tasked with setting the agenda and interrogating government policies and programs. This responsibility must be carried out with a focus on strengthening national harmony,” Sheikh Ibrahim added.
