To address poverty within Muslim communities, the Al-Habibiyya Islamic Society advocates for mutual support among community members through charitable contributions to assist those who are less fortunate.

Al-Habibiyya Islamic Society made the call in its 22nd Annual Ramadan National Unity Lecture in Abuja.

The Annual Ramadan National Lecture with the theme Poverty: The Islamic Solution,  is aimed to provide solutions to eradicate poverty through the Islamic endowment  “Waqf” and providing aid to the poor and needy.

Waqf is an Arabic term that refers to a charitable endowment or trust, typically established for Islamic purposes and permanent dedication of property or assets for the benefit of the Muslim community.

The Guest lecturer of the event, Dr Abdullahi Abubakar Lamido, said the Holy Qur’an had addressed the issue of poverty in many verses where Muslims are ordered to do endowment and give out Zakat, feed the indigent.

Dr Abubakar added that Prophet Muhammad S.A.W sought protection from poverty and urged the Muslims to always seek protection from poverty because it leads to disbelief.

“Poverty has been a challenge to Human development in the world, one of the major aims of Millennium Development.

“The goal of SDGs is to alleviate poverty. Similarly, Islam has provided solutions to tackle poverty, which, if properly applied, no Muslim will be poor.

“One of the measures to tackle poverty among Muslims is an endowment; Islam has achieved lots of success via endowment; this endowment could be of property, funds, or other assets that could be used to help the indigent.

“Additionally, another way to tackle poverty in the Muslim community is hard work,  because laziness cripples the society, that is why Allah orden us to work hard to earn a living and support the less privilege ones among us.”

The lecturer also challenges wealthy Muslims to give out endowments as one of the critical tools to eradicate poverty in the Muslim community and give out Zakat to indigents.

In his remark, the Chief Imam Al-habibiyya Mosque Imam Fuad Adeyemi said the lecture aimed to remain and encourage wealthy Muslims to give endowment and Zakat to assist the less privileged.

“Very soon, Al-Habibiyya will inaugurate the Endowment Day to see how we can assist more people. Allah has shown us the way to alleviate poverty, but the poor practice is what leads to where we find ourselves today.”

Established in 2003, Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society is a nonprofit organization engaged in Islamic education and the promotion of good governance.
