Italy’s Starlink Negotiations Stall Over Geopolitical Concerns
Negotiations between the Italian government and Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, Starlink, have stalled due to geopolitical concerns and political debates within the country.
The proposed five-year deal, valued at approximately €1.5 billion, was intended to provide secure satellite communications for Italy’s government officials, diplomats, and defence personnel in high-risk areas.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed the suspension of talks, citing recent controversies surrounding Musk’s public statements and growing concerns over awarding a national security contract to a foreign entity. Opposition parties have raised alarms about the potential risks of relying on a company closely associated with former U.S. President Donald Trump, particularly given the sensitive nature of the contract.

The stalled negotiations reflect broader European concerns about dependence on foreign satellite services for critical communications. The European Union is currently developing IRIS², its own satellite network, expected to become operational by 2027, to ensure greater strategic autonomy in space-based communications.
Despite the current impasse, Crosetto expressed hope that discussions with Starlink could resume in the future once the political tensions subside, emphasising that any final decision must prioritise Italy’s national security interests.
This development marks a significant setback for Musk’s Starlink, which has been expanding its global footprint by securing government contracts worldwide. Whether the deal will be revived remains uncertain as Italy evaluates alternative options for its secure satellite communication needs.
