The African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation, ITUC-Africa, has commended Ghana for the decision to introduce a free visa regime for all Africans beginning 25 May.
A statement signed by the ITUC-Africa Scribe, Comrade Joel Odigie, described the move as a show of leadership by the government of Ghana.
“This landmark reform reflects Ghana’s enduring leadership in Pan-Africanism and gives practical expression to the vision of a more integrated and people-centred continent.
“By facilitating mobility through this initiative and the forthcoming e-Visa system, Ghana is setting a powerful example for advancing continental unity and cooperation.
“From a workers’ perspective, this policy will enhance labour mobility, promote intra-African trade, and strengthen people-to-people solidarity, while reducing vulnerabilities associated with restrictive migration systems,” Odigie stated.
That statement said that the measure taken by Ghana, aligns with the aspirations of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“We further commend your government’s efforts to expand visa waiver agreements for
Ghanaian citizens, reflecting a spirit of reciprocity and shared progress.
“ITUC-Africa encourages other African countries to emulate this bold step.
“We continue to salute countries like Rwanda, Mauritius, Seychelles, Benin Republic and Kenya who have long removed visa requirements for African to move freely within their continent”.
He said the Organisation remained committed to working with the government of Ghana and partners to ensure that increased mobility is matched with strong protections for migrant workers’ rights and inclusive policies.
