Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum says his administration will work with the management of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to establish a computer-based test centre in Maiduguri.
The Governor who stated this when JAMB Registrar professor Ishaq Oloyede paid him a courtesy call, pledged to allocate land for the centre.
Professor Zulum further instructed the State’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation to sponsor all interested Borno indigenes that are willing to study in tertiary institutions in other parts of the country.
The Governor said, this measure is to fill up the gaps in the merit and catchment area quotas in many Federal Government tertiary institutions across the country meant for Borno people.
Earlier, professor Oloyede while delivering his key note address, commended the Borno State Governor for raising the bar of accountable governance that makes Borno a reference point in Nigeria.
However, the registrar stated that the 6 states in the North East have consistently produced fewer number of candidates for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria compared to number of space available to them by design.
He also said, ” inability to fill up the space is attributable to low enrolment in secondary schools which is also evident in the inability of the North East especially Borno to fill it’s quota in the Unity Schools across Nigeria”.
The registrar urged the Borno State Government to constitute a committee of Borno/JAMB project on monitoring Borno student admission needs.
