The North West Development Commission NWDC has been urged to have clear vision for the development and economic growth of the region.
Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi made gave the advice when he received the Board and Management of the Northwest Development Commission on a courtesy visit at the Government House in Dutse.
Namadi affirmed that, the Northwest region of Nigeria possesses both the human capital and material resources required to surmount its economic challenges and unlock its full potential.
“I urge you to have a clear vision, remain committed, and focus on setting key priorities. Our people deserve better, and with strategic planning and implementation, we can transform the region into an economic powerhouse.”
He commended the leadership of the newly established commission and pledged the support of Jigawa State and the Northwest Governors’ Forum in ensuring its success.
He stressed the importance of collaboration between the commission and state governments to drive meaningful development in the region.
Governor Namadi said, “the Northwest region has the highest poverty rate in Nigeria, but this should not be the case. We have the resources—both human and material—to change this narrative.”
The governor advised the commission to take a strategic approach by studying the comparative advantages of each state and aligning them with state development agendas, adding that the commission must focus on sustainable infrastructure, education, security, and economic growth rather than short-term relief programmes.
Governor Namadi also urged the commission to prioritize transparency, accountability, and integrity in its operations, assuring them of his administration’s full support.
“The people must see that you are genuinely working in their best interest. Once they have confidence in your commitment to development, they will support you. The Northwest cannot afford to lag behind—we must take bold steps to secure a prosperous future.”
Chairman of the Board of the Northwest Development Commission, Lawal Abdullahi, acknowledged the critical role of the governors in the establishment of the commission and assured Governor Namadi of the commission’s commitment to working closely with state governments.
He noted that Jigawa State’s strong agricultural potential makes it a key partner in the commission’s efforts to boost agro-allied industries and infrastructure development across the region.
Abdullahi further stated that the commission would serve as an intervention agency to address key challenges in the Northwest region, including security concerns, out-of-school children, drug addiction, and economic empowerment.
He called for Governor Namadi’s guidance and leadership in rallying support from other governors to ensure the commission’s success.
Details of the engagement was contained in a press statement by Chief Press Secretary to Jigawa Governor Hamisu Gumel.
