Journalists in Kogi State have been charged to put their pens to good use by realising objectives enshrined in the National Gender Policy (NGP) through reportage.
They were also tasked to put an end to Gender Based Violence, ensure social inclusion in all sectors, and report human rights abuses, on which NGP was founded during a one-day training organised by Stallion Times Media Services in collaboration with Wole Soyinka Center for Investigative Journalism.
The facilitator Dr Theophilus Abbah emphasised the need to solve the problems of gender inequality in workplaces, politics, and leadership and in all spheres of life, giving women equal opportunities to attain their potential for the development of the state and the nation.
He urged press men to stand against GBV. In his words “I am giving you insight to developing stories that will address Gender Based Violence and also reveal abuses through reporting, your role as a journalist is to change situations through writing, if you don’t report abuses that means they have never happened’’.
In the same vein, the Special Adviser to Governor Usman Ododo on Media and Publicity Mr Isah Ismail has promised synergy between the government and the Media to facilitate the inclusion of some communities far away from town and to help journalists achieve their goals for the benefit of all.
The convener Mr Isiyaku Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer of Stallion Times, declared that the one-day training is a prompt to creating a working mechanism that will institute dialogue, and robust media engagement to bring about change, accountability and growth to Kogi State.
