Justice Samson Uwaifo’s Legacy Set for Unveiling In Lagos

 

 

A landmark book titled “A Legacy of Kurisprudential Wisdom and Substantive Justice” is set for launch in Lagos on February 19, 2025, to celebrate the esteemed career of retired Justice Samson Odemwingie Uwaifo.

The event will pay tribute to a man whose impact has left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s legal system.

Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, celebrating the Legal Luminary, expressed admiration for Justice Uwaifo, stating that the book encapsulates his monumental judicial career. “Now 90, Uwaifo, who recently celebrated his birthday on January 7, embodies an unwavering commitment to integrity and justice.”

Ozekhome emphasized that the occasion is not only about recognizing a fascinating life but also a reflection of an enduring legacy that calls for a renewed dedication to judicial ethics.

“Justice Uwaifo’s journey began amid adversity in Benin City, but he was molded by values of honor and resilience.

His extraordinary determination manifested at 12 when he undertook a perilous journey to gather funds for his education, eventually leading him to law, a field he embraced despite initial reservations.

“Facing financial hardship while studying in England, Uwaifo undertook various menial jobs to support his education.

His commitment was rewarded with a successful completion of his LLB (Hons) and Bar Finals.

This experience solidified his belief that law serves as a vital instrument for social progress and justice.

“Upon returning to Nigeria, Justice Uwaifo emerged as a fervent advocate for those in need.

His early legal practice was grounded in fairness, setting the foundation for a judicial philosophy that championed equality and protection for the marginalized.

“In 1975, Uwaifo’s appointment as a High Court Judge marked the dawn of an impactful judicial career characterized by integrity and commitment to justice.

His courtroom became a beacon of fairness, and he often reminded colleagues of their moral responsibilities, embodying the ethos that judges must act as agents of truth.

“Justice Uwaifo’s significant rulings, including his renowned judgment in Ekpenyong v. Etim (1990), showcased his insistence on legal precision and clarity.
