In a bid to equip workers with essential skills for the future of work, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has launched a one-week digital skills training program for 100 of its members across the country.

The training, conducted by the Nigeria Communication Commission’s (NCC) Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), focuses on information and communication technology (ICT).

JUSUN, a trade union representing workers in federal and state judiciary establishments in Nigeria, is affiliated with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Speaking at the opening of the training program, JUSUN National President, Comrade Marwan Mustapha Adamu, stated:

“This ICT/Digital Training marks a significant milestone for JUSUN as we prepare 100 of our members under the NCC-DBI ADEPTI Programme.

The Federal Government’s policy to digitalize the judiciary initially posed a challenge, as members feared job losses. However, we saw this as an opportunity to enhance the capacity of our members. As a union deeply committed to members’ welfare, we promised to provide the necessary training to help them remain relevant in the digital era.”

Adamu explained that this training initiative is JUSUN’s response to its commitment, aimed at securing members’ jobs and improving the efficiency of the judiciary system. He further explained how JUSUN approached the NCC and DBI for support in launching its members into the digital world.

The DBI, established by the NCC, is recognized as Nigeria’s leading centre of excellence in ICT training and education. Adamu expressed confidence in the institute’s ability to bridge the digital divide and praised its role in ensuring high standards through its various training programs.

The DBI President/CEO, David Desert, graciously approved JUSUN’s participation in the 2024 Advanced Digital Empowerment Programme for Tertiary Institutions (ADEPTI), which is fully sponsored by the NCC.

The training covers Digital Skills, Cybersecurity, and Emerging Technology (DiSCET) and will train judiciary workers from across Nigeria, including the FCT, over the next five days.

Adamu called on government ministries, private organizations, and other trade unions to leverage DBI’s expertise to train their workforce and ensure their relevance in the digital economy. He urged the labour movement in Nigeria to collaborate with employers to facilitate the effective training of workers through DBI programs.

He emphasized the inevitability of digital transformation, saying, “The world is going digital, and ICT will shape the future of all businesses and human interactions. Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind. Together, we are modernizing Nigeria’s judiciary to be more efficient and responsive to the needs of its citizens.”

In his remarks, DBI President and CEO David Desert, represented by Group Head of Corporate Services, Viola Askia Usoro, highlighted the importance of digital skills in today’s workforce, particularly in the judiciary. He encouraged the trainees to make the most of the opportunity and apply the knowledge in their work.
