The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has initiated an indefinite strike and temporarily shut down operations of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) in response to the company’s decision to lay off over 900 employees.
The company has assured that the affected workers will receive their due benefits at a later date. The strike action reflects NUEE’s commitment to ensuring fair treatment and support for workers in the sector.
It has been reported that Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) began notifying employees affected by its workforce restructuring on Saturday. The company had previously stated on January 31, 2025, that the affected employees were no longer required as part of the company’s operational adjustments.
The report says the sack followed a monthly performance review meeting chaired by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, MG/CEO, Dr Umar Abubakar Hashidu, the Chairman, Board of Directors, Aminu Suleiman, and a board member and Chairman, Human Resources, HR Committee, Ibrahim Umar, in attendance.
Reacting, Acting General Secretary of NUEE, Dominic Igwebike, said the union has directed the workers to shut down all operations of the company till further notice.
According to him, they got wind of the pending sack without justification and hence, directed an industrial action that commenced on Sunday.
All the franchise under the KADECO are still in blackout, as no agreement has been reached between the union and the company.
Meanwhile, economic activities, especially in Kaduna State and its environs, have been affected by the general blackout, as companies such as banks, hospitals, and government offices, among others, are running skeletal services.
