Kaduna Government Reaffirms Commitment to Resolving Ongoing ASUU Strike
By Asma'u Halilu, Kaduna
Kaduna State Government has reaffirmed it’s commitment to resolving the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike by the Kaduna State University (KASU).
KASU resumed the indefinite strike action on Thursday, attributing it to unresolved issues, including outstanding entitlements of KASU staff and payment of third-party funds generated by tertiary institutions to Treasury Single Account.
Addressing a press briefing on behalf of the State Ministry of Education in Kaduna, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Rabiu Yunusa acknowledged the resumption of strike action and understood the concerns it raised.
Yunusa said Governor Uba Sani inherited the obligations amounting to over four billion naira since 2015.
He explained that the Governor has made committed to commence payment over a period of time despite the state’s financial situation.
He said the governor has approved payments for accreditation of institutions, including N291,481,794 for various programs in KASU and other institutions.
“This includes accreditation fees for Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, College of Nursing and Midwifery, and College of Education Gidan Waya.
“KASU has also received approval for nine engineering courses, a development made possible by the Governor’s dedication and effort.”
The Permanent Secretary therefore urged the union to prioritise students’ welfare and academic future.
He noted that the Uba Sani’s administration is working to address all grievances, demonstrating a sincere desire to see the strike action called off and normal academic activities resumed.
