History was made today with Asma’u Yawo Halilu sworn in and inaugurated as first ever female Chairman of Nigeria Union Of journalists, NUJ Kaduna State Council.
The oath of office was administered by Barrister Ferdinand Ikuru amidst cheers from members under the supervision of officials from the National Secretatiat and Vice president Northwest zone, Muhammad Tukur as required by the constitutional provision of the union.
In her maiden and inaugural speech, the new chairman of NUJ, comrade Asma’u Yawo Halilu pledged to unite members and restore professionalism amongst practising journalists in the state.
“We will also prioritize welfare of all members from available resources at our disposal from generated revenue by the council.
“Our team will continually provide capacity building opportunities for all members and ensure resumption of active sporting activities as they say , ‘sports unite people’.
“Most importantly, we will give our Secretatiat a befitting look and make it very comfortable for all members to return to for relaxation after work” she stated.
Comrade Asma’u also called on the general public to disregard Farida Abubakar whom she said was parading herself as Chairman of the Union.
She stated that Farida was disqualified from participating in the Kaduna council election by the National Secretatiat which should be the highest arbiter on issues concerning elections at state levels.
Motion for dissolution of the outgoing Exco was moved and seconded by Andrew Meshielia of Nagarta Chapel and Lawal Ibrahim of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN respectively.
Kaduna Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN Chairman Jacob Zango was nominated after the dissolution of the past Exco to take over proceedings before handing over to the national delegation sent to conduct inauguration of the new Kaduna council leadership.
