The Kaduna State House of Assembly has issued a scathing response to former Governor Nasiru El-Rufai’s controversial claims made during a March 17 interview on Freedom F.M.

El-rufai sparked outrage when he labeled the Assembly members as “stark illiterates.”

The Chairman of the Assembly’s Committee on Information, Henry Marah Zachariah swiftly countered this allegation, emphasizing that all members met the necessary constitutional qualifications for their election, as outlined in Section 106 of the Nigerian Constitution.

The former governor also questioned the Assembly’s authority to investigate his administration, but Zachariah cited Sections 128 and 129 of the Constitution, which grants the Assembly the power to conduct investigations related to its legislative functions.

Moreover, El-Rufai disputed the legitimacy of the report produced by the Ad-hoc Committee that investigated his administration, alleging that it was written by a paid individual. However, the Assembly defended its members’ integrity, stating that they possess the necessary qualifications to conduct such inquiries.

The Assembly’s findings are public, and El-Rufai’s attempts to challenge them in court have been unsuccessful. In light of his defamatory comments, the House may pursue legal action.

Regarding the recent removal of the former Executive Chairman of the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS), the Assembly clarified that the Speaker does not have the authority to appoint or dismiss individuals in such positions.

The statement from the House of Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to upholding its constitutional responsibilities and maintaining the integrity of its members amid public discourse.
