Kaduna State Governor in Northwest Nigeria, Uba Sani has reviewed the state tuition fees downwards by 30%.

He disclosed while addressing newsmen at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna.

He said on assumption to office in May, he made a solemn commitment to the citizens of Kaduna State to run a people-centred, all-inclusive administration that shall leave no one or any part of Kaduna State behind.

According to him, the review was done in response to the public outcry over the current fees being charged by tertiary institutions in Kaduna state and its effect on school enrolment and retention.

He mentioned that he had directed Heads of Tertiary Institutions in conjunction with the Ministry of Education to obtain relevant information on the extant fees regime in state-owned tertiary institutions and made the following recommendations:

That the extant fees regime in the state-owned tertiary institutions is burdensome and has led to a significant decline in student enrolments.

Also, the extant fees have made many students either abandon the pursuit of tertiary education or moved to alternative institutions.

The committee further stated that to reverse the trend mentioned, a competitive fee model must be adopted in tertiary institutions.

It suggested that the competitive fees model should respond to current realities and promotes access to quality education.

“As a caring, responsive and responsible government, we have accepted the recommendations and accordingly reviewed the fees downwards as follows:

  1. a) Kaduna State University

Current Fee: N150,000

According to the Governor, the downward review of the extant fees regime aligns with our commitment to offering palliatives to cushion the effect of the general rising cost of living in the polity, especially in the wake of recent petroleum subsidy removal in Nigeria.

“The welfare of the people is our topmost priority. Our administration shall continue to take all measures necessary to ensure access to free and qualitative education for every child in Kaduna State from primary to secondary school, expand access to higher education, enhance Teachers’ Welfare & Teaching Standards; improve School Infrastructure, build ICT competence in our students from basic education level, and intensify investments in Technical & Vocational Education.”

Meanwhile, the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Kaduna state axis expressed her total pleasure over the review of school fees of Kaduna state-owned tertiary institutions by the state government.

Faith Progress Istifanus, Chairman, NANS Kaduna Axis made the appreciation while speaking to newsmen.

“Without mincing word, we wish to state that NANS Kaduna has remained resolute and steadfast towards assuring the welfare and interest of our students are being salvaged.

“While we appreciate our heartfelt gratitude to Governor Sani, it is important we plead for further succour and palliative for our teeming students to ameliorate the current economic hardship.”
