Kano Approves ₦38.6bn for Execution of Key Projects

The Kano State Executive Council has approved a total of ₦38.6 billion for the execution of key projects and policy interventions across major sectors, underscoring the state government’s push for infrastructure renewal, human capital development and improved service delivery.

The approvals were announced at a press briefing by the Commissioner for information and internal Affairs Ibrahim Waiya following the outcome of the Council’s 35th meeting and presided over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House, Kano.

According to Waiya the education sector, received the sum of ₦1.69 billion for the settlement of outstanding obligations to boarding school suppliers for the 2025/2026 academic session.

It also approved ₦369.9 million for the rehabilitation of Government Secondary School, Mariri, and ₦375 million for the procurement of 50,000 crate bags for primary and secondary school students statewide.

The information Commissioner added that, an additional ₦1.33 billion was approved for the relocation and reconstruction of Maikwatashi and Danwaire Primary Schools to Gama C in Nassarawa Local Government Area.

The Council approved revised and fresh costs for several road projects, including ₦16.29 billion for the re-award of the Gwarzo–Tsaure–Tsanyawa Road, ₦4.42 billion for the completion of a five-kilometre dualised road in Karaye Local Government Area, and ₦2.22 billion for the rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of key sections of Murtala Muhammad Way, Bompai Road and Audu Bako Way.

Other approvals Waiya said, covered additional works around the airport axis, the construction of a conference centre at the Governor’s Lodge in Kwankwasiyya City, and mosque construction and renovation projects in Kura and Rimin Gado local government areas.

Other Key Projects

In the water sector, Waiya explained that, the Council approved ₦182.1 million for a pipeline project from Hotoro Flyover to Hotoro ARTV communities, ₦577.3 million for the settlement of diesel supply debts and outstanding KEDCO electricity bills, and ₦398.2 million for Phase II of the Abba Kabir Yusuf Reach-Out Water Supply Projects targeting underserved communities.

To boost healthcare delivery, the information Commissioner said, ₦318.1 million was approved for renovation and equipment at Lamba Primary Healthcare Centre in Bichi Local Government Area.

The security sector also received attention, with ₦483.75 million approved for the procurement of 300 Boxer motorcycles for the newly established Neighbourhood Watch Corps.

In agriculture, the Council approved ₦1.48 billion for the construction of the Dangora–Masama–Dansoshiya rural feeder road and a link road to Dansoshiya Dam in Kiru Local Government Area.

Under land and urban development, Waiya said, ₦6.82 billion was approved for compensation to 5,015 property owners affected in Rimin Zakara.

The Council also approved ₦130.68 million for a capacity-building workshop on anti-corruption, financial fraud, leadership and ethical values for public servants.

Neighbourhood Watch Corps

On policy matters, Waiya explained that, the Council approved the absorption of the Neighbourhood Watch Corps into the state service, with directives for the issuance of permanent and pensionable appointment letters.

“It also ordered the settlement of all pending certificates for contractors handling classroom construction projects across the 44 local government areas, with a one-month completion deadline.

Waiya announced other decisions to include: the appointment of management and board members of the Kano State Mining Company, a comprehensive review of the qualifying examination policy, settlement of outstanding earned academic allowances for staff of Northwest University, Kano, and new measures to eradicate street begging through collaboration among relevant ministries and agencies.

He also announced that contracts for some five-kilometre road projects in Makoda, Doguwa and Fagge local government areas were revoked over poor performance.

Waiya said, the council meeting also featured presentations and courtesy visits, including the introduction of the new Vice Chancellor of Northwest University and awards recognising Kano State’s achievements in agriculture, youth and sports development, and peace-building.
