The Kano State Government has taken a major step toward strengthening professionalism in public communication, with the formal induction of 72 Information Officers and public relations practitioners into the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
The milestone event, held in Kano, was spearheaded by the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, who also joined the inductees and served as the Chief Host.
Describing the ceremony as a historic achievement, the Commissioner noted that, the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to repositioning information management across Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and Local Government Areas.
He said, “This is more than just a ceremonial event, it’s a transformational step toward professionalising public information services.”
Waiya further announced plans for another batch of 50 officers to undergo a Master’s Class in Public Relations to qualify for full NIPR membership.
This, he said, aligns with a broader reform agenda focused on building a competent, ethical, and well-informed public workforce.
By joining the NIPR, the inductees now hold professional recognition and are bound by the core values of the institute, which include truth, transparency, accuracy, and accountability in public service delivery.
The Commissioner extended appreciation to the national and state leadership of the NIPR for their support, with special acknowledgement to the Institute’s President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr. Ike Neliaku, FNIPR, for his inspiring leadership and personal presence at the event.
Administering the induction oath, Dr. Neliaku commended Kano State for setting a benchmark in professional development within the public sector.
He emphasised that the ceremony marked the beginning of a journey in ethical public communication and urged the new members to actively participate in the Institute’s activities and pursue excellence.
“This induction is just the beginning.
“Your growth as professionals depends on your commitment to continuous learning, participation, and ultimately striving to become Fellows of the Institute,” Dr. Neliaku said.
An orientation lecture was delivered by seasoned journalist and communication expert, Associate Professor Sule Yau Sule, who educated the inductees on the structure, responsibilities, and expectations of NIPR membership.
He urged them to uphold integrity and embrace lifelong professional development.
Also, the Kano State NIPR Chairman, Comrade Aliyu Yusuf, expressed gratitude to all partners and stakeholders, and particularly lauded Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for supporting the initiative.
He also commended Commissioner Waiya’s dedication and leadership in making the induction a reality.
Certificates were presented to the inductees, marking a new chapter for public communication in Kano State and reinforcing the government’s resolve to promote professionalism and ethical standards in public service.
