Amid rising tension over the Kano State Emirate Tussle in North West Nigeria, a group known as One Kano Agenda (OKA) has appealed to Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to take a proactive role in encouraging peaceful dialogue in resolving the disputes.
The group also called on the respected elders of the North to support dialogue as a peaceful means of resolving the matter.
At a press briefing in Kano, Director General of One Kano Agenda (OKA), Ambassador Abbas Abdullahi, said a prompt non-partisan mediation effort is necessary and will go a long way in maintaining mutual respect between state and federal institutions and protecting the values of traditional institutions.
“To our royal fathers and traditional leaders, our guardians of heritage, your wisdom and voices are needed now more than ever.
“We urge you to continue being voices of reason and to encourage restraint and understanding among your followers. The people of Kano look up to you. Let your leadership guide us through this time with dignity and foresight.”
Ambassador Abdullahi urged the people of Kano state to channel their energies into dialogue, community building, and civic participation rather than discord.
“Let this be a turning point where we, the people of Kano, reaffirm our commitment to unity, peace and development.”
Ambassador Abdullahi explained that recent developments around the Emirate Tussle have stirred tensions, sparked public debates, and regrettably fueled discord among the people.
“While discussions on matters of history and tradition are important, we must be careful not to allow misinformation or political manipulation to erode the unity we have built over generations.
“The matter of our traditional institution is one that deserves deep respect and careful handling. The Emirate is not just a cultural symbol, it represents centuries of governance, values, and leadership. Attempts to politicize or exploit this heritage for personal or partisan gain risk harming the social fabric of our state. Let it be clear that the peace and dignity of Kano must never be sacrificed for any agenda.”
He called on all youth civil society groups, religious leaders, political actors and traditional stakeholders to rise above divisions and put Kano first.
“Let us not allow any individual or institution to drive a wedge between us.
“As we go forward, let every community leader, youth representative, and citizen become a promoter of peace. Let us teach our young people that the true strength of Kano lies not in conflict but in collaboration, not in division but in solidarity.”
